Thibaud Boudignon — Savennières, Loire Valley

Thibaud Boudignon is one of the most compelling winemakers to have emerged in France in recent years — a story of radical reinvention that began not in the vineyards, but on the judo mat. Originally from the Médoc region of Bordeaux and a former high-level judoka, his transition into winemaking began in 2002. His path took him through Bordeaux’s Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Canon La Gaffelière, before leading him to Burgundy, where at Domaine Philippe Charlopin he absorbed the Burgundian philosophy of terroir expression and parcel-by-parcel vinification.

In 2008 he settled in the Loire Valley, establishing his estate with 3.5 hectares of old vines on exceptional terroirs in the heart of Anjou and Savennières. Today, the domaine covers 7 hectares of certified organic vineyards, producing wines exclusively from Chenin Blanc.

His approach is uncompromising: minimal intervention in the vineyard, hand harvesting, indigenous yeast fermentation, and ageing in a range of barrel sizes. Ageing takes place in a mix of 350, 600 and 1,200-litre barrels, with progressively less new oak across the range. The result is wines of remarkable purity and precision, drawing comparisons to Grand Cru Burgundy in their depth and length.

The flagship cuvée, Clos de la Hutte, sits on pure schist soils and offers extraordinary complexity and power alongside remarkable finesse — with a production of just 1,000 bottles per vintage.

In just a few years, Domaine Thibaud Boudignon has secured a place at the very top of the Loire and on the tables of Michelin-starred restaurants worldwide — a rare achievement for such a young estate.
